Picking Up Materials
Materials can be picked up in person at any USMAI library by selecting the preferred pickup institution when placing the request. Library patrons will be notified via email when their loans are available for pickup. Materials available for pickup at LNDL can be retrieved via the Contactless Pickup lockers in the Loyola-side vestibule. LNDL staff will contact patrons with alternate pickup instructions if their materials are too large to store in the hold lockers.
Returning Materials
Loyola Notre Dame Library and USMAI Library materials can be returned to the library desk on the first floor, the book drop outside of the library, or to any USMAI library. Library equipment and media and Interlibrary Loan materials must be returned to the library desk on the first floor.
Fines and Fees
Loyola Notre Dame Library books and media: no fines (except equipment)

Items borrowed from USMAI libraries:
- Fines are accrued if materials are not returned or renewed by their due date
- Fees may apply for lost or damaged items
- Fines and fees are owed to the lending library
- Borrowers will receive an email with instructions to pay the institution that owns the material. If borrowers do not provide an email address, a letter will be mailed.
- If you have returned USMAI items late and have not received a bill from the lending library, contact that library (USMAI Libraries list below) to confirm that you do not owe fines or fees.
- Notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to get a notice does not change the obligation of the borrower to return or renew the material on time. The borrower is responsible for updating their contact information.
- Unpaid fines or fees are turned over to the State of Maryland’s Central Collection Unit, which may refer the debt to an outside collection service.
Interlibrary Loan materials can accrue fines and fees.
Placing Holds for Materials Already Checked Out
If you need an item already checked out by another borrower, you can request the item through the catalog, which will initiate a recall process. When the current borrower returns the item, it will be placed on hold for you.
Items you check out may be requested by another borrower. When this process is initiated, a notice with the new due date is sent and you will be asked to return the item to the library.

Interlibrary loan is governed by United States copyright law and the borrower assumes certain responsibilities:
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfilment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
For comprehensive information, see the Copyright & Fair Use site maintained by Stanford University Libraries.
